The Cost Of Entertainment
Some time ago it was brought to my attention that girls find guys who play video games unattractive. This makes sense at an intuitive level. Speaking using generalizations, women tend to gravitate toward status. The more money involved, the more female attention a pursuit seems to generate. I had a gut feeling that video games were on the cheaper end of the entertainment spectrum. It would stand to reason that more expensive hobbies would be more popular with girls.
For example, an equestrian hobby usually costs thousands of dollars. As we know from stereotypes, girls love horses, and probably guys involved with horses. So all of this got me thinking that I should look into this a bit deeper and get a feel for the lay of the land with respect to the cost of hobbies. This page is dedicated to my informal research into the matter.
The List Of Hobbies And Their Costs
Possible Conclusions
After looking into all of these hobbies, I don't think I discovered anything groundbreaking. In general, it appears like women aren't so much attracted to the cost of certain hobbies but rather to the underlying competence associated with the hobbies.
For example, a lot of the hobbies that are deemed as being the least attractive also seem to be the least skill-intensive. The more attractive hobbies all seem to have an element of creativity, self-improvement, or difficulty.
In conclusion, video games likely get a bad name because they consume a lot of time and they don't result in self-improvement, learning, or the creation of something. In general, self-destructive hobbies such as gambling are rated as very unattractive. This all makes sense to a certain degree.
Footnotes And Breakdown
Reading
Entry Cost: Reading doesn't necessarily need an entry cost. Depending on where you live, it's possible to have a reading hobby through a local library free of charge to you.
